High Quality Metalwork

I came across this quote from Benjamin Franklin today, thought it was quite appropriate given the amount of cheap, imported ‘wrought iron’ style metalwork there is both in high street chains and online. Something to consider when buying a weathervane I think!

” The bitterness of low quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten”

Today in the Black Fox workshop Phiz is making two art deco style window boxes and I have produced a Cat & Bird design no. 7 house sign. I’ve also been working on designs for our indoor range of metalcraft products, I’m especially looking forward to seeing my new wall mounting CD rack finished – I’ll be making the frame later today but will have to wait for laser cut parts to arrive before it can be finished.

Bespoke Dog Weathervane

These are my Springer Spaniels on a beach last year. I have been trying to produce a weathervane design based on them, but am really struggling to get the a photo form the right angle. They move too fast and the amount of long hair makes it difficult to pick out their shape, but I prefer working from my own photographs so will persevere! Our labrador weathervane is instantly recognizable, and I’m working on getting the spaniel design just as good. We can produce a weathervane or house sign design based on any breed of dog, and would love to expand our range so don’t charge for design work.

Weathervanes at Capesthorn Hall

We have just booked to exhibit this sunday at the classic car and bike show at Capesthorn Hall near Macclesfield. Tatton was quite successful and got a lot of positive feedback on our car based weathervane designs, so really looking forward to this one. We have been working this week on car designs that people suggested they would like to see on a weathervane or house sign – a VW Beetle, Mini, Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite, MG Midget, MGA, MGTD… the list goes on! We’d love to expand our range of classic car weathervanes so are not charging extra for design work. Any other ideas please let us know!

Samba Backpack Frame

This is the Samba Backpack Frame we made recently for a customer in Manchester. It’s a bit of a departure from our Black Fox weathervanes and house signs, but was an interesting project to do. She is in the process of wrapping the frame with ribbons and attaching feathers, looking really good so far and can’t wait to see it finished!

Black Fox Classic Car Show

This was our stand at the Tatton Park classic car show! It was the first time we had exhibited our weathervanes at an event like this so didn’t really know what to expect, but had a very positive response, and really enjoyed the weekend overall! The star of the show had to be our Triumph Bonneville weathervane – it attracted a lot of attention and was much admired. Our business signs also created a lot of interest, as did our house number signs on the display board. We are currently working on orders from the show – I am particularly excited about producing a boat weathervane for a couple we spoke to at the show.

I really like the photo above of the Austin Healey 3000 and Morris Minor traveller weathervanes against the blue sky, I think it really shows off the quality of the designs. And the weather held out for us too! A bit of rain on sunday afternoon but nothing we’re not used to in Manchester. Met loads of really nice people and very much looking forward to exhibiting at other car and craft shows over the next few months.

Tatton Park Classic Car Show

Here is baby Robin, the newest addition to the Black Fox team, looking after his weathervanes and house signs at the Tatton Park classic car show this weekend. Pictured here admiring his Morris Minor Traveller weathervane in the surprisingly good weather on Saturday afternoon!

Classic Car Weathervanes

We have just picked up the new additions to our range of car weathervanes – here they are! The Morris Minor Traveller, Aston Martin DB5, E-Type Jag, and Austin Healey 3000. I’d really struggle to choose my favourite.  These car weathervane designs are also available as house signs and hanging basket brackets.  As with all of our weathervanes, these designs come with three options for letter bars – traditional scrolls, plain bars to compliment more ornate designs, and circles for something a little more modern.

We are now just running around getting everything ready for the Tatton Park Car show tomorrow, we’ll be camping so fingers crossed for good weather!

Aston Martin DB5 Hanging Basket Bracket

Here is our latest Black Fox hanging basket bracket, just finished this morning. We won’t have time to have it electroplated and powder coated before the car show this weekend, but we’ll be including it on our stand to get some feedback on the design. As with our weathervanes and house number plates, we can produce a hanging basket bracket using any car or motorbike.

The distinctive arrow shape on the ends of the mounting plate was plasma cut in our workshop. We spent some time debating the design inside the bracket – my original idea just used circles, which we tried in a straight line and also curved, but neither looked quite right. I think the addition of the 10mm square bar really gives the silhouette a sharp and very distinctive edge, but we are still developing this design so are open to any better ideas!

We are looking at the idea of selling these hanging basket brackets as part of a set with our classic car weathervanes and house signs.
