Weathervane Fixings
Black Fox Weathervanes are straightforward to install and come with full instructions. We offer a variety of different weathervane fixings to suit a number of different locations. In order to get the best functionality from your weathervane, we recommend fixing at the highest point available.
To establish which weathervane fixing is best for your property and location, please read through the below options. If you choose the wrong fixing and need to swap at a later date, we are happy to do so as long as it can be returned in the same condition it was sent out in. If you are ordering a weathervane as a gift and do not know which fixing the recipient will require, it's not a problem to order the weathervane and have the chosen fixing sent out at a later date.
Gable End Bracket for weathervane
This heavy duty bracket is only available with Medium, Large and XL weather vanes. It is designed for attaching the weathervane to the gable end wall of a property, with the weathervane sitting proud of the ridge. The horizontal arm of the bracket extends by 16cm (6 1/2") as standard, but we can alter this to suit your requirements usually at no extra cost. The pole provided is 18" long, but as with the bracket itself, we can alter this measurement depending on individual specification. It is worth remembering though that the longer the pole, the more likely it will be to flex in strong winds. This fixing is the most popular and easiest to fit.
Ridge fixing - for mounting weathervane to the ridge board
This fixing is suitable where a property has a hipped roof as shown in the image below, or where the Gable end walls are not prominent allowing the weathervane to be seen. The fitting is designed to be bolted over a standard 2” x 6" ridge board, however should your ridge board vary from this please advise us in your order and we will be happy to make a bracket to fit. The pole (welded to the main fixing) is 18" long, though again we can vary this to suit your requirements. This fixing needs to be fitted between two ridge tiles. As the job involves removing and re fitting tiles, we'd recommend you use a professional roofer, unless you are an experienced DIY-er who is confident in working at height.
Cupola / Clocktower fixing
This fitting is designed to be used where the weathervane is to be fitted on top of a Spire, Cuppola, Clock tower, Bell tower or other structure where the roof comes to a point. The mounting pole is fitted with a length of threaded rod 30cm long. The rod is to be fed through a pre drilled hole in the crossmember directly beneath the central point of the roof. We are able to vary the length of threaded rod if required, and also the length of the mounting pole, which comes as standard at 18". As with the ridge fixing, we feel this is a job best done by a professional roofer.
Post Fixing for flat roofs or post tops
This fixing is suitable for mounting weathervanes onto the top of posts or walls, flat roofs or any other suitable horizontal surface. The flat base plate measures 75cmx75cm (3"x3"), therefore these are the minumum dimensions for the surface you are fixing to. The pole is 14" long for a small, or 18" long for all larger sizes, please let us know if you need this dimension to vary from these sizes.
L Bracket fixing for small sheds
Only available with the miniature weathervanes; this fixing is a lighter version of the Gable bracket described at the top of this page. This fitting is designed for attaching miniature weathervanes to the side of a shed or other small garden building. The horizontal arm of the bracket extends 3" , and the pole is 14" long as standard, however we are happy to produce other sizes to suit your requirements where necessary at no extra cost.
If what you require for fixing your weathervane is not shown here, please contact us on 01450 880 380. We are happy to produce bespoke fittings usually at no extra cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit a weathervane to my chimney?
Yes, a simple gallows-style bracket can be strapped to your chimney, providing:
- The chimney is not in use (smoke could affect the finish of the weathervane)
- The chimney has been recently pointed/maintained to a professional standard
- The chimney pots have been removed or are small enough to not get in the way of the weathervane
Send a photo of the intended mounting location to
jenny@blackfoxmetalcraft.co.uk and we'll be happy to advise further.
None of your standard weathervane fixings are suitable, can you produce a bespoke one?
Yes. We can create custom fixings to suit your requirements and can usually do so within the price of your weathervane. Email us at jenny@blackfoxmetalcraft.co.uk with details or a photo.
Should I remove my wind vane if a storm is forecast?
- If given clear airflow (i.e. it's not sited next to a much taller tree or building), any functioning weathervane will always turn so the arrow points to where the wind is coming from.
- All Black Fox Metalcraft weathervanes function correctly – many available online do not.
- We have never had a customer report storm damage, and we leave ours up year-round.
